Joan E. Malone, age 63, of Erie, passed away Monday, July 2, 2012 after a courageous battle with a long term illness, at UPMC Hamot. She died the way she wanted, peacefully in her sleep. She was born in Erie, Pa. on March 27, 1949, daughter of the late Leo F. and Anne E. Stahover Niemiec. Jo attended Academy High School and had worked for several Erie companies. She loved her furry companion, Buttons, who was always at her side or on her lap. She enjoyed feeding her birds every day and watching TV, especially Animal Planet. She will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her son, Steven A. Szocki (Dawn) of Erie. Gramma will also be missed by Kayla and Kiel Szocki and Bryan and Madison Hess. Also loving and missing Joanie are her sisters and brothers and their spouses, Anne "Bunny" Van Dusen of Linesville, Pa., Jackie and Larry Shartle of Newburg, Ind., Dan And Dawn Niemiec of Erie and Jim Kolhoff and his companion, Sue Thompson, of Kingston, Wash. Additional survivors include an aunt, Catherine Palmer of Erie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Frederick Washok. Her family is abiding by her wishes that no visitation or services will be held â€" just be kind to our four legged friends. We will all miss you more than words can say, Mom and Joanie.
