Daniel John Driscoll, age 77, a resident of 8708 Cardiff Court in Raleigh, N.C. died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Hospice of Wake County. Mr. Driscoll was born February 19, 1935 in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Daniel John Driscoll and Mida Flannagin Driscoll. Mr. Driscoll graduated from the Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, Pa. He graduated from Gannon University and the University of Cincinnati with degrees in chemistry. He completed advanced studies in Biochemistry at the University of Washington of Seattle and Maryland State University. During his 39 years of experience in the U.S. Public Health Service and the EPA his research interests centered upon the biochemical aspects of air and water pollution. During the course of his professional career he published scientific articles in peer reviewed publications such as the Journal of The American Chemical Society. From 1958 to 1960 he served in the U.S. Army at the Army Chemical Warfare Center at Edgewood, Maryland performing basic research on the physiological effects of gases upon the human body. Mr. Driscoll was a Second Level Toast Master who won numerous awards in competitive speech competitions. He used his expertise to speak before corporate groups and service clubs about the necessity of early detection of Prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Rawa Driscoll; three daughters, Denise Driscoll Williams of Cary, N.C.; Susan Driscoll Oakley of Henderson, N.C.; and Diane Driscoll Mahmoudi of Morgan Hill, Calif.; step-son, Robert Hennick of Cayuga, N.Y.; step-daughter, Kathy Ann Roy of Cary, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings, Patrick Joseph Driscoll; and Edward Joseph Driscoll. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612. The family will receive friends 2:00 â€" 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Erie, Pa.
