John P. "Phil" Koval, age 63, of Erie, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Latrobe, Pa. on September 7, 1949, son of the late Charles and Sally Koval. Phil was a graduate of Penn State University Main Campus and did graduate work at Edinboro University. He was a physical education teacher with the Erie School District at East High School. He also coached football for East High School and Gannon University, and girl's softball at East High. Phil was the Athletic Director for East for many years. He retired in 2005. Phil was a past member of the Erie Jaycees, serving as president in 1980-81; and was an avid sports fan, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. Phil is survived by his wife of 41 years, Martha Zimmerman Koval; two sons, Bryan C. Koval of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Matthew P. Koval (Shanna) of Erie. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road on Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Service there on Thursday at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. Bernhard Bischoff. Private interment will be held.
