Gloria Charlotte Allen Bernella, 85, of North East, Pa., very suddenly & unexpectedly ended her earthly journey & began her Heavenly one in the early morning hours of October 5, 2012 at UPMC Hamot in Erie. She was born on December 3, 1926 at that same, although much smaller, hospital, the daughter of Walter Rathman Allen & Gladys Irene Williams Allen, both of North East. Gloria loved attending school & particularly enjoyed her days at the one-room Jones Mill School House located at the corner of Orchard Beach & Middle Roads. She graduated from North East High School in 1944, going on to attend Allegheny College in Meadville, graduating with a degree in Biology in 1949. When she wasn't involved with school work or after-school activities, she would help with her family's business, The Allen Motel, located just north of the intersection of Route 5 and North Lake Street. Gloria married in December 1950 & began her life outside of western Pennsylvania, living in several interesting places during the passing years, including eastern Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Florida, Massachusetts & far across the country & the Pacific Ocean on the small tropical island of Kwajalein, located in Micronesia, just a few degrees north of the equator. She returned to North East in the late 1980's, choosing to remain in her hometown for the rest of her life. Gloria was a talented lady with many interests. Stemming from her love of history, she became an accomplished genealogist, spending the majority of her adult life tracing family roots. She also had a joy of reading books of all kinds, but had an especial interest in English history and the American Civil War. She was an extremely talented spinner/weaver; she could take a just-shorn sheep fleece and magically turn it into soft, wonderful yarn! Gloria just loved to travel & explore. Europe, Asia, Canada, tropical islands, the U.S. to be sure - she was always wanting to see new places! In her younger years, Gloria enjoyed camping, skiing, sailing, fishing, golfing, playing softball, bowling and scuba diving, as well as working in her garden, playing bridge, singing, playing the guitar and going to yard sales and auctions. She loved horses, cats & even an extremely odd Dachshund named Pepper. Gloria was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of North East. She was also a member of several genealogical & historical societies including, but not limited to, the National Genealogical Society, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the Flagship Niagara League, the Erie County Historical Society, & the Descendants of the Founders of Ancient Windsor. She was also a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority's cherished "Order of the Rose" and a was a very enthusiastic, active member of The Longstreet Society, of Gainesville, Georgia. Gloria was preceded in death by both her parents, her mother in 1954 and her father in 1975. She is survived by her son, David James Bernella of Pepperell, Massachusetts; her daughter, Susan Lee Herring and her husband, Glenn, of North East; her most-beloved grandson, Christopher Duffy Holroyd of North East; her sister Mary Hutchinson and her husband, Frank, formerly of North East, but now residing at The Villages in Florida; niece Carol Uglow of North East; and, niece Mary Ellen O'Brien and her husband, Greg, of Shavertown, Pa. Friends may call on Tuesday, October 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of North East on Wednesday, October 10 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating Reverend Gregg Townsend. A private burial will be held at North East Cemetery at a later date.
