Martin H. Thompson, age 86, of Erie, died Monday, October 8, 2012 at Pleasant Ridge Manor East. He was born in Rockland, Pa. on April 6, 1926 son of the late George Wesley and Dorothy Viola Walter Thompson. He was a graduate of McKinley Grade School, Wilson Junior High School, 1944 graduate of Academy High School, and attended Gannon University. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Germany, G Company 11th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry division. He worked at General Electric Company, Erie Mop Wringer Company in Girard, Lord Manufacturing Company, and the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier retiring after 24 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bread of Life Community. He was a big band buff, record collector, blood donor, and life member of the 78th Division Veterans Association. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Martin Thompson whom he married on December 29, 1948; two daughters, Maura Szymecki and her husband Thomas of North East, Ellen Artz and her husband Dane Joseph of Erie, a son, Daniel J. Thompson and his wife Florence of Erie; nine grandchildren, Michael and Justin Cummings, Amanda Kiel, Daniel Jr., David, and Gregory Thompson, Christina, Brandy, and Dane Joseph Artz, Jr. Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street, Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A prayer service will be held there Thursday morning at 8:30, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Joseph Church, Bread of Life Community, 147 West 24th Street, at 9:00 a.m. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
