David Charles Laird, 77, passed away on Oct. 10, 2012, in the San Francisco V.A. Hospital from an extended illness. Dave was born in Erie on July 9, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Robert in 1979, Frederick in 2008 and Richard in 2011. Survivors include a brother, Ronald of Staten Island, a brother, William of Erie, two sisters, Virginia of Miami and Susan of Erie, also several nieces and nephews. Dave was an Air Force veteran. He also was a pilot with multiple rankings. He was an accomplished musicologist whose area of expertise included drum percussionist, concertinist and stringed instruments. His greatest accomplishment was in the mastery of Scottish bagpipes as a virtuoso. His musical sagacity was impeccable and profound. He taught many students who became accomplished pipers. He ranked as the very top of American pipers. He will be missed and remembered by all his family and friends. May he rest peace.
