Karen Ann Mahon Obituary
Karen Ann Mahon, age 65, of Wesleyville, passed away peacefully, in her sleep, on Saturday, December 15, 2012, due to an extended illness. She was born in Erie on May 20, 1947, the daughter of Elsie Curry Mahon of Harborcreek and the late Richard Vincent Mahon. Karen graduated from Harbor Creek High School, received her Bachelor's Degree in education from Edinboro University, and then began her career, teaching elementary school in Port Allegheny, Pa., until 1980, when she returned home to help care for her ill father, while teaching at Rolling Ridge Elementary, until the time of his death. She then moved to Winter Haven, Florida and began teaching at the Vanguard School in Lake Wales, while pursuing both her Master's and Doctorate Degrees, in special education, from the University of South Florida, graduating both Suma Cum Laude. She then began her Professorship at the University of Central Florida, in Orlando, retiring in 2000, whereupon she returned to the Erie area. Other than her family and friends, Karen's greatest love in life was reading. She spent many happy times with a cup of tea and a good book! She loved to travel, with beaches and lighthouses being her most favorite places to visit. She especially loved the Outer Banks, Cape Cod, and Myrtle Beach, S.C. Besides her mother, she is survived by her sister, Kimberly Dukich (Kevin) of Wesleyville; her brother, Richard Mahon of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; her most beloved niece and nephews, Delaney Marie-Karin Dukich, Drew Dukich and his fiancé Caitlan Clark, all of Wesleyville and Michael Mahon of Rochester, N.Y.; her favorite aunt, Marce Sturdivant of Erie; and her constant companion, her dog, Nita. She also leaves behind her best friends since high school, Chris Ruvolo, Dawna Cass, Patty Libengood and Carol Fuller, all of Erie, Sylvia Steele of Springhill, Florida, and her close friend, Jon Murosky of Wesleyville. A special thank you to all the wonderful caregivers and supervisors from CRI, Brightstar, and ECCM, especially Claire, Brandy, and John. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Thursday at 1:00 p.m., at Lawrence Park United Methodist Church, 4015 Niagara Place. A private interment will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Erie County Public Library, 160 East Front St., Erie, PA 16507 or the ANNA Shelter, 1555 East 10th St., Erie, PA 16511.
