Richard D. Smith, 85, of Harborcreek, died Monday evening January 21, 2013 at St. Mary's Home East following a brief illness. A resident of the Erie area since 1965 he was born in Fulton, N.Y. on April 25, 1927 a son of the late George and Marguerite Smith. Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and graduated from Syracuse University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked with the GE for 40 years before retiring in 1991 and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as usher for many years. He was a member of the Squaws and Paws Square Dancing Club and the Presque Isle Dancers. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, David Smith. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Kornahrens Smith; three sons, Steve Smith of St. Louis, Mo., Brian Smith of Las Vegas, Nev., and Todd Smith and his wife Karen of Erie; four grandchildren, Lauren, Adam, Jason, and Jeffrey; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road, on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited to funeral services at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
