Lavina Caroline Hughes, age 85, resident of Erie, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Saint Vincent Health Center. Born in Waterford on March 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Grace Ryan Thompson. Lavina grew up in Waterford and lived most of her years in Glen Burnie, Md. where she raised her family. She returned to Erie in 1991. Lavina was an avid bowler and an excellent pie baker. Over the years, many relatives and friends have been the recipient of a homemade apple pie from Lavina. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Eugene Thompson. Survivors include two daughters, Debra Jean Backus and husband Richard of Moorefield, W.Va., and Cheryl Ann Sickle and husband Joseph of Solomon's Island, Md.; and three grandchildren, Matthew (Alyssa), Kaitlyn, and Adam Sickle.
