Charles R. Sheppard, 91, of Erie, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013 at his residence. He was born on April 20, 1921 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., son of the late Dewey and Nellie (Sherrard) Sheppard. He served in the U.S. Air Force and later in Civil Defense. He worked in a variety of construction trades, eventually retiring from Valocchi Construction Company. Survivors include his beloved "Es" wife of 66 years, Esther (Bargielski) Sheppard, four children, Colleen Dovichin (Michael), Russell Sheppard (Charlene) of Killeen, Texas, Dewey Sheppard (Liz) of McKean, Pa., Karen Sheppard (Daniel Madden) of Erie, 11 grandchildren, Erin, Dawn, Colin, Chara, Brook, Rustene, Lucas, Julia, Nathan, Reuben, and Madison, and seven great-grandchildren Bailey, Haley, Logan, Finley, Odin, Taylor and Ben. He is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Willard (Bill) Sheppard of Norfolk, Va., Franklin Sheppard of Yellville, Ariz., Anna Perry, Peggy Kyne, Donald Sheppard and Barbara Michael, all of Berkley Springs, W.Va.," West-by-God Virginia". "Shep" loved a good song, Nature, and being outdoors; hunting too, cooking, a variety of literature and playfulness. He was an engaged, even gifted, listener who greatly enjoyed the company of his family and friends, good conversation, and in his last years, a nip of Polish blackberry brandy and a wad of his Red Man chew. Relatives and friends may call at the Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, Inc., 459 East 12th Street, Erie, PA 16503 on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
