William A. DeShields, age 91, formerly of Bethel Park, Pa. passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at St. Mary's Home at Asbury Ridge. He was born in Finleyville, Pa. on July 4, 1921, son of the late Alfred and Ethel (Daugherty) DeShields. Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. From Saipan to coal mines, and Homestead Electric to Menzie Diary, Bill provided for his family. Bill was a loving and devoted husband to Mary for 63 years. Bill nurtured and loved his daughter Sue, adored his grandchildren, and shone in the circle of life while holding his great-grandchildren. A devoted Christian, Bill enjoyed listening to cassettes and then CD's of his favorite sermons. Classic movies and Lawrence Welk were bedtime favorites. Pastimes with Mary included square dancing, sailing on Lake Arthur in one of the sailboats he built in his garage, and vacationing at Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. Watching the grandchildren in person and later on video always put a sparkle in his eyes. At St. Mary's, Bill met many new friends, enjoyed listening, talking, sharing stories and jokes, and keeping up with current events. Bill was polite and respectful and regarded as a fine gentleman by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, his wife Mary E. DeShields, and a grandson Daniel William Curry. He was the loving father of Sue Curry, husband Paul of McKean, loving grandfather of Julie Berkowitz, husband Robert of Cary, N.C. and Dr. Jennifer Pfleghaar, husband Charles of Perrysburg, Ohio and great-grandfather of Wyatt, Seth and Ada Berkowitz and Anna and Declan Pfleghaar.
