Madeline M. Stephany, age 96, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013 at Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center. She was born in Erie on January 25, 1917 a daughter of the late George and Louise Theobald MacKrell. She graduated from St. Patrick's Grade School, East High School and Erie Business College. Following graduation, she worked for Drs. Schlindwein and Delaney for nine years. She and her husband, John, were the founders and owners for 20 years of Stephany Catering and she remained involved with the business until the time of her death. She moved to Stuart, Florida in 1986 and returned to Erie in 2006. While in Florida, she volunteered in Hospitals and Meals on Wheels. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by Richard and Carrie Smith MacKrell who raised her following the death of her mother, Louise, who died of complications surrounding Madeline's birth. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John, on February 14, 2006 after 62 years of marriage, son-in-law, Jack Theiss, six sisters, Margaret Niland, Rita Shalkham, Doris Barthelmes, Jean Oleson, Mary Smith and Lucy Clark and a brother, George MacKrell. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Lyons (Tom) and Katherine "Kitty" Bailey (Ron) all of Erie, three sons, Mike Stephany (Cheryl), David Stephany (Susan) and William Stephany, daughter-in-law, Patti Stephany all of Erie, 15 grandchildren, Julie Boam(Mike), Jeffrey Theiss (fiancé Angie), Christine Turner (Brian), Jon Theiss (fiancé Carrie), Brian Bailey (Linda), Timothy Bailey (Rachel), Jennifer Stephany, Katey Stephany (fiancé Aaron) all of Erie, John Stephany, Washington, D.C., Keri Stephany (fiancé Grant), Chicago, Ill., Alexis Stephany (fiancé Jeff) and Elizabeth Stephany (fiancé Rocky), both of Memphis, Tenn., Matt Stephany of Carrollton, Va., Greg Bailey, Fairlee, Vt. and at sea, and Andrew Stephany (Laura), Pittsburgh, Pa., nine great grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Don Smith and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Thursday at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc., 2502 Sassafras St., Erie, PA 16502 from 4-9 p.m. and are invited to a service at the Funeral Home on Friday at 10:15 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church at 11 a.m. Send condolences to Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
