Charles J. Burgoyne, age 82, of Erie, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Saint Mary's Home of Erie. Born March 22, 1931 in Erie, he was a son of the late John J. and Agnes (MacDonald) Burgoyne. A graduate of Cathedral Prep in 1950, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Gannon College in 1954. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1956, stationed at Walter Reed Hospital, and participating in the atomic bomb tests on the Bikini and Enewetak Islands. Upon his discharge, he attended Western Reserve University, where he received a Master's Degree in 1958. Charles was an English and Humanities teacher for the Erie School District and McDowell High School from 1958 until 1993, when he retired. He was the recipient of the General Electric Foundation Star Teacher Award. Charles was a member and past Eucharistic Minister at Saint Peter Cathedral, was a member of the Niagara League, where he volunteered in the Niagara Museum Gift Shop from 2000-2003, and was a volunteer with the Erie Philharmonic. His extensive travels took him to 59 countries, and he enjoyed reading, and the company of "The Girls", Corie and Cassie, his Golden Retrievers, and his Calico cat, Carlie. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Noel (Jaeger) Burgoyne, whom he married on July 2, 1966; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maryce and Jim Cunningham, of Savannah, Ga.; and nieces and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John J. Burgoyne, Jr. Friends may call Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard, and may attend a prayer service there Thursday at 9:45 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Peter Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Trinity Cemetery.
