Robert H. Whitney Obituary
Robert H. Whitney, age 84, of Harborcreek, died on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at home. He was born on October 17, 1928, in Harborcreek, Pa., to the late Harold and Dorthea Peck Whitney. Robert graduated from North East High School in 1949 and owned and operated Whitney Farms, located in Harborcreek, throughout his lifetime. In earlier years, he was a member of the North East Chamber of Commerce and the Harborcreek Business Association. During his years of farming, he formerly served on the Erie County Soil & Water Conservation Commission, Erie County Farms Association past president, PFB Pennsylvania State Director, National Grape Delegate, Agway Co-Op Committeeman, and Horticulture Society Member. He was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where he was instrumental in the building of Msgr. James Sperry's House and the Church Rose Garden. Robert formerly served on the Harborcreek School Board, where he received the Golden Apple Award, and was a member of the Erie Siebenbuerger Club and Eastside Moose Club. He was involved with The Boy Scouts of America for 28 years, especially Troop #151. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Whitney; children, Frederick and Daniel Whitney; brother, Edwin Whitney; and sister, Alvira Smith. He is survived by his wife of 11 years Shirlene Leamer Whitney whom he married January 5, 2002; daughter, Patricia Grimes; sons, Charles Whitney (wife Brenda), Kenneth Whitney (wife Laurie), Dennis Whitney (wife Rebecca), all of Harborcreek; a special niece, Peggy Smith Dzara; grandchildren, Ryan Whitney, Rachael Whitney, Zachary Whitney, Megan Whitney, Whitney Grimes, Katilyn Grimes, Jacob Robb, Aiden Dennis, and Riley Whitney; stepchildren Ronald Meehl (wife Jacalyn), Gilbert Meehl (wife Karla), and Renee Bolger (husband Paul), all of Arizona, Sharon Ballew (husband Dan) of North East; step-grandchildren Heather Humbert, Todd Grimes, Shanna Haid, Shannon Meehl, Robin Thomas, Kimberly Stone, Jennifer Putman, Randall Meehl, Jeffrey Meehl, Jamie Simmons, Christopher Stoor; and 27 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East, on Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9, and are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Private interment will be in St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mercy, 873 Bartlett Road, Harborcreek, PA 16421.
