Donald L. Allen, 88, of Britton Run, Pa., passed away on Friday, June 22, 2013, at Edinboro Manor Nursing Home. Edinboro, Pa. He was born October 15, 1924 in Spartansburg, Pa. the son of the late William "Tim" Allen and Hope (Bloomfield) Allen. He was raised and educated in the Spartansburg, area where he lived his entire life, except the time he spent in the military. He attended the Britton Run and Spartansburg schools. He left school during his senior year to join the military during WWII. Don and several other veterans who also quite school and went to join the military's war effort, were deservedly presented his High School Diploma by his High School Diploma by the Corry Area School District. As a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp. he was a tail gunner on a Flying Fortress. He completed 35 missions, over Europe, which were mainly bombing missions over Germany, but included supply runs to France, Poland, and Hungary. His plane was hit by flak on eight of those 35 missions, including one mission that required an emergency landing in Italy for repairs to the plane due to damage to the tail of the airplane and loss of power to an engine. Upon his return from the war, he married Esther (Taylor) Allen on February 29, 1948. She preceded him in death on December 13, 2007. Although they were married just 2 ½ months short of their 60 years, they only celebrated 14 anniversaries. Don worked in several area factories, including Corry Jamestown, GE, W L Dunn Construction, and Associated Spring, retiring from Associated Spring in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion, LeBaron Post #237 of Union City, Pa. the Corry Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 264, the Corry Masonic Lodge # 365 F. and A.M., and the Zem Zem Shrine in Erie, Pa. Besides his parents, and his wife, Don was also preceded by his step-mother, Margaret Rose Allen. Survivors include four sons, Bruce (Theresa) Allen of Spartansburg, Pa., Brent (Rebecca) Allen of Union City, Pa., Brian "Red" (Sue) Allen of Wattsburg, Pa. and Brad (Joan) Allen of Corry, Pa., twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a sister Beatrice "Tootie" Skiff of Sierra Madre, Calif., and a brother William "Bus" Allen of New Port Richey, Fla. Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert M. Glenn Funeral Home, Inc., 62 South Main Street, Union City, Pa. and attend funeral services there on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 10 a.m. Rev.
