Joan M. Tomat Beckman, age 79, of Harborcreek Township, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, February 17, 2014, following a brief illness. She was born February 25, 1934 in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter of the late Oliver and Louise Farenzena Tomat.
She was a 1952 graduate of Harbor Creek High School. On November 11, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl Beckman, to whom she was married 49 years, until his passing on January 20, 2001.
Joanie was a devoted homemaker who, for many years, helped work on the family grape and tomato farm. She was also employed for 38 years in the Harbor Creek High School cafeteria, until her retirement two years ago. Previously, she had been employed by the former Keystone Foods. Joanie was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Church, and was also a former member of the Harborcreek Fire Dept. Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed going to the casino, bingo, painting, sewing, hunting, bowling and playing cards. Joanie loved caring for her family, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and especially loved holiday gatherings and Sunday family dinners.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Renee Tomat.
Survivors include her two sons, William Beckman (Chantal) and Brian Beckman (Tracy), all of Harborcreek; one sister, Olive Johnson (Ray) of Harborcreek; five grandchildren, Eric DeRose, Genevievé Thompson, Kelli Beckman (fiancé Joey), Tracy Beckman (Bethany), and Jillian Beckman (Jess); three great-grandchildren, and one on the way; and several nieces, nephews and cousins
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Further visitation will be held at Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Church, Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Gregory Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mercy R.C.
