Genevieve T. Benczkowski "Jean" Soscia Obituary

Genevieve "Jean" T. Benczkowski Soscia, age 97, of Erie, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014. She was born May 17, 1916, in Erie, the daughter of the late Francisiek and Mihalina Benczkowski.

A lifelong resident of Erie, Jean was an active member of St. Paul's RC Church, where she belonged to their Altar Rosary Society and the St. John of God society. She had worked at the Erie County Library, as an assistant to the librarians, and also as a book mender. Jean and her late husband Hank owned and operated several local eating establishments, including the Avon. Her greatest joy was entertaining friends and family, and she especially loved following the activities of her two daughters and their families.

Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Henry "Hank" Soscia; a daughter, Carol A. Katchen Javon and by her four brothers, Charles, Joseph, John and Harry Benczkowski; and her four sisters, Martha Zysk, Catherine Pinkowski, Sophie Thompson and Irene Benczkowski.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Bonnie McGraw and her husband Tom of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; and a brother Henry Benner and his wife Mary of Athens, Ga. She is the grandmother of Scott M. McGraw and his wife Agnieszka and Andrew T. McGraw and his wife Boguslawa; and is also the great-grandmother of Emily R. and Ryan A. McGraw. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and her three "Special Angels," Patty D'Aurora, LuAnn DePalma, and Rosemary Ardillo.

Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th and Liberty St., on Thursday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m., and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Friday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., in St. Paul's RC Church. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Asera Care Hospice, 1600 Peninsula Dr., Erie, PA 16505.
