Loving Mother and Grandmother
Jennie "Zhena" Orloff Wassil, age 96, a longtime Erie resident, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the Sarah Reed Retirement Center. She was born November 12, 1917, in Erie, the daughter of the late Fred and Christine (Gorbatoff) Orloff.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Onisefor Gorbatoff; three brothers, George (Grisha) Orloff, Tim (Chimma) Orloff, Joe (Mooney) Orloff, and a sister, Frances (Fima) Gorbatoff.
Jennie was a 1935 graduate of East High School and worked as a secretary at American Sterilizer (AMSCO), until her retirement in 1982. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, baking and crafts, and was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren: Jay Brooker of Cleveland, Ohio; Jill Huber of Atlanta, Ga.; Kenny Engels of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jonathan Engels of San Diego, Calif. "Gram was always there for us."
Jennie is survived by her two daughters, Janet Brooker and her husband Jim of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and Valerie Engels and her husband Ken of Florida and the Dominican Republic. She is the sister of Frank (Frola) Orloff of Madison Heights, Mich.; Tom Gorbatoff and his wife Julie of Erie, and Catherine (Kaya) Wassell and her husband Ken of Erie. She is also survived by four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to call at the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity, 251 East Front St., Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and are invited to attend Funeral Services there Saturday at 8:30 a.m., followed by burial in St. John the Divine Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church's Endowment Fund. Arrangements are by the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th and Liberty St.
