John L. "Boone" Tate, 72, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at UPMC Hamot, in Erie, Pa., with his family by his side. He was born March 23, 1942, in Macon, Miss., to the late Bill and Ethel Tate.
John loved helping others and spending time with his family. As a young man he loved hunting and fishing. He was educated in the Noxubee County school system and moved to Erie over 47 years ago. John worked at Urick Foundry and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for over 20 years, until his retirement. He was also a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. His smile will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Lee, Bill "Big Man," Jr., and B.J. "Honey" Tate; two sisters, Rosie Lee Tate and Mildred Sanders.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted partner, Sallie B. Hunter, of Erie: five daughters: Tia Hunter, Veronica Lindsey (Tracy), Andrea "Moochy" Jones, Antoinette Tate, all of Erie, and Donna T. Hunter, of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sons: Antonio "Tony" Hunter, Michael Hunter, both of Erie, and Mark "Jerome" Hunter of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers: Rev. Earnest B. (Lillie) Tate, of Macon, Miss., Rev. Willie (Patricia) Tate, of Elgin, Ill., Jimmie (Glenda) Tate, of Alpharetta, Ga.; three sisters: Virgie Stewart of Macon, Miss., Dorothy Ike, of Elgin, Ill., and Rachael Carter, of Alton, Ill.; one brother-in-law Rev. Willie Sanders; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Friends may visit the Law Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave., today, April 10, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and may attend the homegoing service at Second Baptist Church, 757 East 26th Street, Friday, April 11, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Allen B. Green officiating and Rev. Charles Mock eulogizing. Interment will be in Erie Cemetery. Funeralization is by Law Funeral Home 2926 Pine Ave.
