Beloved Husband and Friend
Patrick "Pat" T. Wheeler, 67, of Girard, passed away at his home, on Thursday April 24, 2014.
He was born in Meadville, on December 20, 1946, a son of the late Joseph and Margaret Erdley Wheeler. Pat graduated from Strong Vincent High School and enlisted in the US Navy, during the Vietnam War
, where he was a boiler tender, serving aboard the USS Oriskany (CVA 34). He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star
. Following his discharge from the military, he went to work at Hammermill Paper, and later worked in maintenance at the Erie County Veterans Administration, until retiring in 2005.
Growing up in the 60s, Pat loved the muscle cars of the era, especially Chevelles and Corvettes. He also loved the golf game and enjoyed playing in the local leagues, with his dear friend Chuck. His wife Sharon recalls Pat's father dying at an early age, his father asked Pat to look after his mom, which he did faithfully for 40 years. Pat was a man who loved people and would assist anyone at anything. Pats wife Sharon said, " He had the best Soul I ever knew."
Pat was of the Catholic faith, was a member of the VFW
Post #567 Erie, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), and was Vice President of the VA Employee Union.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Sharon Zaiger Wheeler, whom he married on September 19, 2008; his brother, Sidney Wheeler of California; sister-in-law, Barbara Jones of Texas; brother-in-law, Russell Zaiger (Anne) of Texas; nephews, David, John, Michael and Chris Wheeler; aunt, Irene Rydbom; close friends Misty and Michael Shaw of Meadville; and his beloved dog, Sami.
There will be no calling hours observed.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
