Elmer William Lewis, age 81, of Millcreek, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2014, surrounded by family. He was born on May 22, 1932, in Belle Valley, Millcreek Township, the son of the late Elmer Hunt Lewis and Florence (Barron) Lewis.

Elmer was a 1951 graduate of Millcreek High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army, later retiring from Hammermill Paper Company after 42 years. He worked at the Erie KOA Kampground. He was also a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He enjoyed volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America and Second Harvest Food Bank. In his free time, he enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, watching NASCAR races, and spending time with his grandson.

Elmer is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Lewis, and three children: Ken Lewis, Tom Lewis (Jane Hume) and Mary Lewis. He is further survived by one grandson, Karl Lewis, one brother Larry Lewis (Mary Grace Lewis), as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister Theresa Snyder, and two brothers; John Lewis and James Lewis.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, PA 16504, on Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
