Richard (Dick) A. Cooney, age 87, of Erie, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 18, 1926 in Erie the son of the late Dr. Richard W. and Ellen McNamee Cooney.
Following high school graduation, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and served as a Gunners mate on the USS Haynsworth during WW II. Following the war, he spent 44 years working on the railroad with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail railroads as a trainman.
Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting and was a member of the Bay City Gun club, the NRA and the ATA. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard W. Cooney and two brothers, Edwin and Charles Cooney.
Dick is survived by his wife, Janet Brown Cooney along with his children; Mary Crandall and her husband Gregory of Aptos, Calif.; Patricia Cooney and her husband Charles Messenkopf of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Margaret Jean Baker and her husband Byron of Columbia, Mo.; Sarah Scott and her husband David of Altadena, Calif.; Janet Westcott and her husband Michael of Lawrence Park, and John P. Cooney and his wife Maureen of Orland Park, Ill. He is the brother of William Cooney of Erie, Sarah Kearney and her husband Brian of Grove City, Pa. and Maura Wiltse of Erie. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Monday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will be in Trinity Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 218 E. 11th St., Erie, PA 16503 or St. Patrick Haven, 147 E. 12th St., Erie, PA 16501.
