James M. Jackson Obituary

In life we are sometimes fortunate to cross paths with people whose boundless energy and infectious smile can warm a room just by their arrival. Jim Jackson was one of those rare people. Born in 1928 in McKeesport, Pa., the son of Harry and Agnes Jackson, Jim was always ready with a joke or kind word, right up until the end of his long and happy life.

Wanting more for his family than the declining steel industry of McKeesport, Pa. could offer, Jim headed north to Erie with $15 and the work ethic that made this country great. For the next 55 years, until his death on June 18th, Jim called Erie home. He lived a full and rewarding life dedicated to family, friends, work, and his faith. When Jim was not teaching upholstering skills to prison inmates, or building nuclear valves for our nation's submarine fleet, you could usually find him roller skating, fishing Lake Erie, or playing horseshoes in the yard, waiting for the start of a family perch fry.

Preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his son Joseph, sons-in-law Daniel Davis and Eric Manning, and all of his siblings, Jim was ready for the next step of his journey.

His legacy lives on through his six children, Kathleen Holland and her husband Gregory of Millcreek, Patrick Jackson and his wife Heather of Chesapeake, Va.; Barbara Spusta and her husband David of Millcreek; Theresa Manning of Ruckersville, Va.; Mary Ann Moores and her husband Christian of Augusta, Ga.; and Martin Jackson of Centreville, Va. In addition to his children, Jim was also known as "Papa Jim" or "The Cookie Man" to his 16 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, that he spoiled at every given opportunity.

Also mourning his passing will be numerous neighborhood children and stray dogs, who were also the beneficiaries of his confectionery kindness. (I'm sorry Jasper, your race to reach the "Meals on Wheels" lunch delivery before Jim, has come to an end) Teacher, craftsman, machinist, skater, fisherman, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather - James Michael Patrick Jackson III greeted death not wishing for more time to live a fuller life, but like a worker heading home after a long day, and a job well done.

Job well done, Jim.

We will miss and love you always.

P.S. Sorry, Dot, we kept him here as long as we could.

Memorials can be made to The Gallagher Center at Saint Mary's East, 607 East 27th St., Erie, PA 16504.
