Enjoyed His Grandchildren

William J. Hayes, age 89, of Erie, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at St. Vincent Hospital.

He was born in Erie on July 2, 1925, a son of the late James and Agnes Kuntz Hayes.

William graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy in WWII, and was a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class, serving on the LST687. He became a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service, retiring after 37 years. After retirement, he worked for Rectenwald Blue Print, Brabender South Woods, and Potratz Floral Shop. He enjoyed golfing, model railroading, and swimming at LECOM Fitness Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie Nies Hayes in 1999, two sisters, Joan Koehler and Rosemary Santomauro, and three brothers, Gerald, James and Patrick Hayes.

He is survived by two sons, William Hayes, Jr. (Almma Creese) and Robert Hayes (Ann), all of Erie, two grandchildren, Breanne and Nicholas Hayes, and a brother, Rene Hayes (Karen) of Erie. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call on Thursday at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc., 2502 Sassafras St., Erie, PA 16502, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and are invited to a service there on Saturday at 9:30, followed by the Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church at 10 a.m. Send condolences to www.kloeckerfuneralhome.com.
