Walter A. Silka, age 95, of Erie, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Throop, Pa., September 18, 1918, a son of the late Walter and Anna Yurkowski Silka.
Walter served with the U.S. Army during World War II
. He was employed as a foreman with Urick Foundry, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed playing pool and cards, flower gardening, and bowling.
The family extends a thank you to a special nephew, Joey, special niece Barb, as well as all the staff at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Alzheimer's unit and Southern Care Hospice.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Albina Wieczorek, and three brothers, Joseph Silka, Sr., Anthony and Roman Silka.
Survivors include his wife, Alice (Proba) Silka; one son, Walter A. Silka, Jr of Cincinnati; two daughters, Mary M. Pruchniewski, husband Matthew, of Erie and JoAnn Klein, husband Frank, of Union City; five grandchildren, Nancy Trambley, husband Jason, of Chippewa, Pa., Jacqueline Rich, husband Adam, of Columbus, Ohio, Brian Klein, of Union City, Tyler Pruchniewski, of Erie and Jeffrey Silka, of Cincinnati; great-grandson, Landon Thomas Trambley; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 East 38th St., Sunday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m., and may attend services there Monday at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
