Barry W. Schafer, age 72, passed away unexpectedly, on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at his home.

Barry was born February 1, 1942, in Erie, Pa., a son of Fritz and Karin (Newman) Schafer.

Growing up, he and his family were very involved in the Erie Kennel Club. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving from 1959 to 1963. He worked at the Erie Zoological Society; he also owned the former Barry's Boardwalk, Schafer Milk Hauling, Inc., and prior to moving to New York, Barry was a sales consultant for Redi-Mix Inc., in Phoenix, Arizona.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting, spending time with his family, and his Labrador retriever.

He is survived by his three daughters, Dr. Deborah Schafer of Wayland, N.Y., Rebecca (Jeffery) Kaye of Geneseo, N.Y., and Kathleen Schafer of Wayland, N.Y.; four grandchildren Carson Mohler, Elizabeth Kaye, Daniel Kaye, and Gavin Burke; three siblings, Ronnie Schafer of Erie, Pa., Dr. Dennis Schafer of Phoenix, Ariz., and Diane (Robert) Sokolowski of Erie, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
