Johnnie Keyes, age 74, 1356 E. 20th St., passed away Saturday, February 27, 2010, at Hamot Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1935, in Laurel, Miss., son of the late Jacob and Hattie Lockett Keyes. He was a resident of Erie for 47 years. He was retired from the former Superior Refuse where he was employed as a truck mechanic. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Johnnie enjoyed fishing, gardening, dogs, scenic driving and sightseeing, feeding the birds along the Peninsula and was a big-time Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He loved children and being with his family and long-time friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Keys, Sr. and three sisters, Eloise Coleman, Hattie Mae Keys and Georgia Keys. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, David Overton, Michael Hooks and Nate Overton and wife Ayana, all of Erie; four daughters, Theresa Overton, Erie, Sara Layton and husband Derrick, Rock Hill, S.C., Melissa and Kimberly Quinn, Arkansas; a brother, Deacon Rafe Keys and wife Shirley, Erie; a sister, Quilly Carr and husband Paul, Buffalo, N.Y.; dear life-partner and friend, Barbara Gaither, Erie; 33 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Law Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave., and may attend a funeral service on Saturday, 11 a.m., at Second Baptist Church, 757 E. 26th St., with Rev. Dr. Allen B. Green officiating. Interment in Erie Cemetery.
