Ellsworth R. Marteeny Obituary
Ellsworth R. Marteeny, 95, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Friday morning, September 17, 2010, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born April 19, 1915, in West Springfield, Pa., and was the son of Daniel W. and Hazel (Ruby) Marteeny. He served in the Medical Detachment of the 7th Infantry Third Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honored with 32 decorations, including three Purple Hearts and the French Croix de Guerre medal for his service in the war. Mr. Marteeny was a graduate of the Dana Musical Institute and was a musician with the "Vocal Chords". He studied opera and chorus directing at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, where he received his Masters of Music. He sang opera at London's Duke Theater and was soloist throughout England and the Channel Islands. He spent the next few years singing throughout Europe and living in Rome, Italy. One of his greatest accomplishments was singing at the coronation of King George VI in London in 1937. He also served as choir director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and at the United Church of Christ for several years. He was a member of Evergreen Lodge #222 F & AM, Chapter, Council and Commandry and had received his 65-year pin from the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Elks Club, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a 50-year member of the Grotto. He was past president of Erie and Crawford County Professional Ceramic Association, past president of Northeast Shore Ceramic Association, and past member of the International Association of Ceramic Judges. He was also the first Eagle Scout in Conneaut. Mr. Marteeny was a retired postal clerk from the Conneaut Post Office and was also the owner and operator of HEJD Ceramics in East Conneaut. He also served in various callings in the Latter Day Saints Church. Survivors include; his son, Daniel (Diana) Marteeny of Malad City, Idaho; his daughter, Hazel Phillips of Ashtabula, Ohio; six grandchildren, Dania (Norman) Smith, Douglas (Elizabeth) Marteeny, Dennis (Chris) Marteeny, Kristen Phillips, Kimberly Phillips, and Katie Phillips; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and more distant relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Jeanette in 2007; his brother, Leo Marteeny; and his son-in-law, William Phillips. Funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, September 22, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with Father David Evans of St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by American Legion Cowle Post #151 will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., and also on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at Noon. Evergreen Lodge will conduct its memorial service at 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the William H.
