Oggie Vadzemnieks, age 79 of East Springfield, Pa., went home to be with The Lord on Friday night, October 8, 2010 at his home. Oggie was born in Riga, Latvia on July 26, 1931, the son of the late Arnold and Eleanora (Apinis) Vadzemnieks. Oggie arrived in the USA on May 29, 1949 after leaving Lativia with his parents. He proudly served as a Sargent in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1955. He retired in 1994 after 38 years of service at Kaiser Aluminum where he worked as an Impression Die Sinker. Oggie was a member of the Springfield Fire Department where he served as a President and Past Chief. He was also one of the first paramedics in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the NRA, the American Philatelic Society, the Northwestern Sportsmen's Club, the Erie County Fire Fighters' Assoc., and was also a member of the Federated Church in East Springfield where he served as an usher for 43 years. He loved to hunt and fish and loved his camp in Marshburg where he enjoyed spending time with his family when he could. He was a wonderful father, husband, and friend. Besides his parents, Oggie is preceded in death by a brother, George Vadzemnieks and Inta Vadzemnieks Stitch. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Evans) Vadzemnieks; a daughter, Rebecca (Mark) Crosby; and two sons, David (Melanie) Vadzemnieks and Michael Vadzemnieks; and three grandchildren, Evan, Jacob and Hannah. He is also survived by a sister, Mara Eddinger of Cleveland, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. Friends and Family are invited to call at the Jean Evans Thompson Funeral Home, at 11883 Main Street, East Springfield, on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend Life Celebration Services at the Federated Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ed Huntley, officiating. Burial will follow at Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, Main Street, East Springfield, PA 16411, or to Great Lakes Home Healthcare Hospice, 1647 Sassafras Street, Erie, PA 16502.
