Loved Dirt Track Racing Alfred W. Sumner, 82, of Girard, passed away unexpectedly due to natural causes Friday morning, March 4, 2011 at his residence. He was born December 14, 1928 in Erie, son of the late Walter and Hazel (Spaulding) Sumner. Alfred has worked for McQuillen Oldsmobile-Pontiac-GMC in Girard since 1964. Alfred loved dirt track racing and was a life member of the Twin State Auto Racing Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Sumner, in 1982, two sisters, Virginia Pinckney and Alberta Hammond, a brother, Frank Sumner, and an infant brother, Leroy Sumner. He is survived by a daughter, Tammy Reichel and her husband, Kevin, of Union City, a son, Walter Sumner and his wife, Jeannette, of Cranesville, three grandchildren, Stephanie, Allison and Michaela, a brother, Melvin Sumner of Girard, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial calling hours will be held at the Mattera Funeral Home, 188 East State Street, Albion, on Monday from 7-9 p.m. Private burial will be in Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family c/o the Mattera Funeral Home.
