Paul E. (Speed) Salter of 219 W. 16th Street, passed away Friday, October 7, 2011, at Presque Isle Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born in Erie on April 30, son of the late Buffus Speed and Lillie Mae Jones Salter. A lifelong resident of Erie, he was employed at various companies in Erie as a laborer and in other capacities. He attended Second Baptist Church in his youth. Paul is known for his love of fashion, hair styling, cooking, and shopping, and of course his "Daily Numbers." He cared for and helped to raise many children in his family. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece (whom he helped raise), Carolyn Thompson; a brother, Otis Speed; and five sisters, Leola Barnes, Virginia Ruth Moffatt, twin sisters Thelma McLaurin and Velma Green, and Pearly Mae Edwards. Paul was a major force in his family. Due to the tragic death of his niece, Gloria Barnes Carr and her husband, Willie Carr, Sr. in 1975, he took on the challenge of their three children, whom he legally adopted, making them his children. Whom he leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters, Monique Carr, Chanel Carr Troop, husband, James, and his son, Willie L. Carr, Jr. Prior to this, due to the loss of his sister, Leola Barnes, (from cancer) in 1973, Paul had already stepped up to finish raising her three youngest children as his own. Paul Barnes of Champagne, Ill., Darlene Dickens Ettison, husband, Marcal, and Ricky Barnes (Pomona) of Erie, Pa. He also leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Lavell Speed and Larry Salter of Erie; four sisters, Annie Mae Salter, Mary Jo Lewis, Mary Lee Blanks, husband, Rev. Joe Blanks, and Jean Ridgeway, all of Erie. Never one to give up on his family, Paul was called upon to help assist with the care and raising of his brother's children, Lillian Bailey of Erie, Pa. and Carolyn Thompson (deceased); and other nieces and nephews whom he helped to care for, Nicole Thompson, LaRon Bailey, wife, Nikkie, Derrick Ollie, all of Erie, Pa., and Resheemah Poston Jenkins of Augusta, Georgia. Paul will be greatly missed by all relatives and friends. "To know him was to love him." Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Law Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave. from 1 to 5 p.m., followed by a repass service at from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Metroplex Center, 1837 Buffalo Road, Erie, PA 16510.
