Charles Allen McCurdy (Cubby) age 87, of Erie, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Erie Presbyterian Lodge. He was born in Erie on February 19, 1925, a son of the late Allen and Myrtle Morton McCurdy. Charles served as a Medic in the United States Army during World War II receiving several award ribbons including American Theater Ribbon and WWII Victory Ribbon. He graduated from East High School in 1946 . Charles then served on the Erie Police Force for over 30 years, retiring in 1984 while Acting Deputy Chief. Where in 1972 he was promoted to Captain in the Juvenile Department, and in 1983 received the Law Enforcement of the Year Award. He had attended Elmwood Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Lawrence Lodge No. 708 F.&A.M., the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Fraternal Order of Police. Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Donald and Howard McCurdy and a grandson Ryan E. Hallmark. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Lewis McCurdy of Erie; five children: Sandra McCurdy Gordon and her husband Tom of Naples, Fla., Debera McCurdy Hallmark and her fiance Stanley Dekiel of Pompano Beach, Fla., Rebecca McCurdy Herman and her husband Dave of Erie, Martha McCurdy Stewart of Cypress, Texas and Charles McCurdy of Erie; 12 grandchildren, numerous great- great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 602 W. 10th Street, Erie, PA 16502 on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 12 noon until the time of service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Harry Johns III officiating. The Retired Erie Police Department Association will hold a prayer service Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in Waterford Cemetery with Full Military honors.
