Abe Silver Obituary

Abe Silver, age 89, of Erie, died Saturday November 3, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y. on April 20, 1923, the son of the late Max and Rose Zilbergeld Silver. He graduated from Erie Academy High School and attended Ohio University. Abe served in the US Navy and participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During the battle of Iwo Jima, he volunteered to serve as a beach master, coordinating loading of men and supplies and the evacuation of wounded marines. He was in the scrap metal business from 1946 until 2012 as the President of Max Silver and Sons and Max Silver and Son. Being very active in the leadership of the Jewish Community, Abe would serve as the President of Brith Shalom Congregation and asthe Regional and National President of the Jewish Men's Clubs and the Board of Overseers of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He met Dorothy Barkin in 1944 and knew she was the one for him. They married in 1946 and were together for 65 years; she was the love of his life. Dorothy preceded Abe in death by only 4 months. He is survived by his three children, Dr. Michael Silver and his wife Vickie, of Mequon, Wis. and grandchildren, Max and Sam; Scott Silver and his wife Emily of Harrison, N.Y. and grandchildren, Eric, Tyler, Jacob and Daniella; and Tosha Silver, of Alameda, Calif. Friends are invited to attend services at the Burton Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street, on Monday day at 2 p.m. with Rabbi Leonard Lifshen officiating. Burial will be at C.B.S. Scott,
I was so sorry to hear of your father's passing. He had been a client of mine in the past & always enjoyed visiting him, & looking at all the old photos of he & your mom in their younger years. I was also very sorry to hear of your mother as well. I didn't know she had passed. My thought & prayers are with you at this difficult time. Take care, Lisa Scypinski- Rosenthal
