Jessie T. Smith age 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Fairview Manor. She was born in Erie on August 12, 1923, daughter of the late William and Belva Mason French. Jessie lived in Erie all her life and spent the last 25 years wintering in Florida, enjoying the sunshine. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling across the country and locally enjoyed the peninsula by walking, boating and fishing. She was very active and enjoyed bowling and playing volleyball at the YMCA. Jessie also loved to read. She was an excellent cook and baker known for her apple pies. Before she married she worked at Sterling Steel during the war. She became a homemaker and helped her father with upkeep of Bethel Baptist Church. She worked for a time at Thrifty Dry Cleaners and volunteered at Visiting Nurses Association. Jessie was kind and loving and enjoyed spending time with her family of four children, ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers; Orlan and Harold French and two sisters; Ruth Davis and Carol Mae Dilmore. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Herbert P. Smith; three sons, Herbert Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Grapeview, Washington, William of Seward, Alaska and Michael of Mazitlan, Mexico; one daughter, Susan Kerr and her husband, Daniel, of Erie; and two brothers, Wayne French of Florida and Earl French of Erie. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, PA 16504 on Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services there on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Brian Kelly officiating.
