Harriet M Schaper, Girl Scout for life and friend to everyone she met, passed away November 5, 2012 in Hilton Island, S.C. two days shy of her 90th birthday. Harriet gradated Cum Laude from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. with a BS in Home Economics in 1943. She also earned a certificate for teaching in Pennsylvania. She was confirmed as a Registered Dietician after completing an internship at Florida State College for Women and became a lifetime member of the American Dietetic Association. Harriet married Ensign David H Schaper of Erie, PA in 1944 in St. Augustine, Fla. Harriet loved Girl Scouting and was an active participant from grade school. She loved camping, leading Troop 108 in Erie and being an adult Girl Scout. As a member of the Junior League she lectured at the Erie Planetarium and performed with the drama group. She was very involved with The Church of the Covenant in Erie and the Paxton Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, Pa. Harriet loved anything outdoors; hiking, bird watching, biking, ice-skating on Presque Isle bay, and golfing. She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, David and three daughters; Martha Rhine of West Hartford, CT, Betsy Schaper and husband William Bronson of Hilton Head, S.C. and Judith Schaper and husband Daniel Gottlieb of Los Angeles, Calif. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 16 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head with a reception to follow at the church.
