Rita Margaret Kuhn Mehler, age 89, of Erie, left this life for her heavenly reward on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at St. Mary's Home, East. Rita was born in a charming and modest house on Scott Street in Erie Pennsylvania, the home of her parents Cornelius B. Kuhn and Henrietta K. Wiley, May 16, 1923. She was raised Roman Catholic and attended Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Grade School and Villa Maria High School in Erie. After high school, Rita worked at the Erie Boston Store as an elevator operator and at Kuhn's Picture and Framing store. Rita also worked as secretary for The National Erie Company prior to marrying Frank E. Mehler September 24, 1947. From that time on, Rita was a loving wife, devoted mother, and valued friend as she anchored her family through good times and bad. Her children and husband were her life and her faith was her strength. She prayed often and instilled her profound belief in her seven children. Her children knew their mother had a direct connection to God. Rita was a kind and gentle woman to all who knew her. Rita was instrumental in the growth of St. George Parish during the 1950's and much of the 1960's. She served as president of the PTA for several years and worked tirelessly to see the completion of the new Church that serves the parish well to this day. Rita was past president of the St George Parish Rosary Society. St. George Parish Pastor Monsignor Lawrence W. Franklin would show up for dinner from time to time helping keep her seven children in line. Mother has a stained glass window in St. George church dedicated to her. Her faith led her to become a member of the Friends of the Carmelites where she would oversee annual fundraisers for the monastery. Rita was a member of the Erie Maennerchor Women's Auxiliary serving as president and other board positions. She was always there to help her husband Frank E. Mehler with the family business Mehler's Formal Wear in any way she could. Rita was one to give selflessly to family, friends and those in need. Rita took great pleasure in crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren. Her life was one of loving and caring for all she knew. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank E. Mehler, her parents Cornelius B and Henrietta K. Kuhn and her brother James B. Kuhn. She is survived by her sister Mildred Bloeser, four daughters, Mary Ann Hauser and her husband, David, of Erie, Christianne Bostaph and her husband, David, of Erie, Susan Bostick and her husband, Calvin, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Rita Kay Bidwell and her husband, Barry, of Erie; three sons, Frank Mehler, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of North East, William Mehler and his wife, Ann, of Erie and Richard Mehler and his wife, Moira, of Erie. 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
