Richard F. Gardner, age 80, of Erie passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Erie on January 11, 1932 a son of the late Frank P. and Louise (Fitzgerald) Gardner. Richard completed his tool and die apprenticeship at Marx Toys and worked in the trade there and in Cleveland, Ohio. Eventually, he returned to Erie where he was a tool and die engineer at Lord Corporation for 34 years before retiring in 1993. During his career at Lord's he was honored at one time as Engineer of the Year. He enjoyed many hobbies, including fine woodworking, vegetable gardening, fishing, hunting, biking, sailing, and walking. As an avid fisherman he belonged to S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Church for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Eileen Gardner. Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margaret A. (Selleny) Gardner and five children, Karen Barbato, husband Ron of Danville, Ky., Michele Dombrowski, husband Brian of Harrisonburg, Va., Lisa Gray, husband Glen of Waynesboro, Va., Colleen Privette, husband Ken of Alexandria, Va., and Matthew Gardner, wife Karen of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Hayley and Kelsey Barbato, Amanda, Jessica and Daniel Dombrowski, Michael and Jennifer Gray, Adam, Kristen and Carolyn Privette and Nicholas and Olivia Gardner; a sister, Geraldine Ward of Erie; and two nephews and two brothers-in-law. Friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd. Services will be held there on Friday at 10:15 a.m. follow by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Church.
