Darlene Y. Gillingham Johnson Obituary
Darlene Y. Gillingham Johnson, 78, of Erie, died unexpectedly Saturday November 24, 2012 at Ohio State University Medical Center. A resident of Erie all of her life she was born October 10, 1934 a daughter of the late Harry and June Sternberg Gillingham. Darlene was a 1952 graduate of Millcreek High School and most recently worked with Lorei Photography. She was a charter member of the Waterford Lioness Club and a member of the Summit Senior Young at Heart Group and the Summit Township Senior Center. She enjoyed traveling and gardening. She considered her family the most important accomplishment of her life. She found ways to make her family and friends know they were very special to her by making special gifts and doing holiday activities with her grandchildren. Darlene had a strong love for the beauty of nature, flowers, birds, her beloved Presque Isle and a beautiful sunny day. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death on October 28, 2002 by her husband of 46 years whom she married on May 5, 1956, Ralph J. Johnson. Survivors include one daughter Valerie Kennedy and her husband Chuck of Wattsburg; two sons, Ralph J. Johnson Jr. and his wife Karen of Union City and David Johnson Sr. and his wife Jody of Erie; one sister, Gwen Eisert of Erie; one brother, Roger Gillingham and his wife Sue of Washington, Ind.; one aunt, Emma Jean Gillingham of Fla.; six grandchildren, Melissa Brumett and her husband Barry, Pamella Loiacona and her husband Dominic, Lauren Kennedy, Amanda Johnson, David Johnson, Jr., and Jenna Johnson; three great grandchildren, Brittany Bartlett, Justin Brumett, and Olivia Loiacona; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road, on Friday from 2 p.m. until the time of a memorial service at 4 p.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
