James W. McJunkin, age 98, of Erie, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, November 30, 2012, at Forestview Healthcare Center. James was born in Plum Boro, Pa. on July 27, 1914, the son of the late James and Mabel (Boord) McJunkin. He was an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and attained the rank of Major. He served his country in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, Vella Lavella, and Okinawa. His battalion opened the way for the Army to defeat the Japanese at the battle of Sugar Loaf Hill. He served in active duty from August 1942 to October 1946. After the war, he graduated from Penn State University, taught agriculture, then became a principal, and later assistant superintendant of schools, in Delaware and in the Poconos, until his retirement. He moved to Florida and resided there for 25 years, before moving to Erie in 2006. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mable Blanck and three brothers, Wallace, Robert and Murry McJunkin. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn R. (Rasmussen) McJunkin; two daughters, Ruth Kovacs and husband Jack, Cheryl Albanese and husband Rev. Larry, all of Erie; two grandchildren, Dean Kovacs, wife Christy, of Girard, Ohio and Jennafer Kovacs, of Erie; two sisters, Ruth Miller of Warren, Pa. and Lois Alexander of Nacogdoches, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Liam James Kovacs; and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 W. 38th St., at Greengarden Blvd., Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 5440 Washington Avenue, on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
