Joseph L. Guzzy, 87 formerly of Fairview, died Thursday November 29, 2012 in Marrietta, Ga. He was born on September 20, 1925 in Punxsutawney, Pa., to the late John and Sarah (Taraszkiewicz) Guzzy. He graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He volunteered to the Naval Flight Officer Candidate School and studied Primary Flight Training at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Upon the end of WWII he was discharged and returned to Punxsutawney. He remained on Federal Reserves until 1953. He moved to Erie to attend Gannon College where he studied engineering and accounting and graduated in 1950. He worked for the Finestra Corp., then began his own insurance company and worked for the U.S. Treasury, retiring in 1985. Joseph was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard and served there and at Holy Cross Church in Fairview as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5430, Girard, and enjoyed birds, gardening, nursery work, traveling and camping. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Badaracco) Guzzy in 1990, whom he married December 2, 1950 also by his son, Joseph Guzzy Jr.; two sisters, Marie Guzzy, Loretta Bartasavich; brothers, John and Jim Guzzy; and a granddaughter, Theresa Guzzy. He is survived by his four daughters, Mary-Ellen Cesa and her husband, Joe of Kennesaw, Ga., Barb Platter of Marathon, Fla., Christine Frostenson and her husband, Roy of Fortuna, Calif. and Judy Strandberg and her husband, Rick of Englewood, Fla.; his son, Ted Guzzy and his wife, Sharlene of Lake City; sisters, Patricia Righi of Aurora, Ohio and Rose Marie Cieslak of Getzville, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jason and Tim Cesa, Gwen, Theresa, Damion and Christopher Ekirt, and Sarah Frostenson. Friends may call on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to the time of a Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 101 Olin Ave., Girard, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery Girard with full military honors.
