Ronald L. "Ron" Matthis Obituary
Ronald "Ron" L. Matthis, age 60, of Erie, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at UPMC Hamot. Born in Indiana, Pa., on March 12, 1952, he was a son of the late Raymond J. and Kathleen A. (Wagner) Matthis. He was a transportation supervisor with the Erie School District for 23 years, retiring in 2011, and previously worked at Erie General Electric and Riley Stoker Corporation. Ron was a devoted husband, father and brother, and will be sadly missed by his family and many close friends. He loved his dogs, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, kayaking, carpentry and welding. He was a member of VFW Edinboro McKean Post 740, and the American Legion in Fairview. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Matthis, a sister-in-law, Sherry L. Matthis, and a nephew, Roger B. "Chip" Matthis. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Rita Jane Harkins Matthis, whom he married March 5, 1977 at Sacred Heart Church; a daughter, Lindsay Laird, husband Matthew, of Edinboro; three brothers, Frederick Matthis, of Erie, Roger "Chip" Matthis, of Girard, and Ernest "Buddy" Matthis, of Marienville, Pa.; two sisters, Judith Matthis and Becky McClelland, husband Ron, all of Erie; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard, and may attend a prayer service there Friday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church at 10 o'clock.
