Gerald (Jerry) Milton Mooney (87) of Ripley N.Y. and Rockwall Texas passed away on January 10, 2013. Jerry was born in Conneaut, Ohio, on May 13, 1925. He is preceded in death by his parents William and Iean (Kinsinger) Mooney, siblings James, Irene, William (Bill), and Merlin (Bud), son John Mooney and Grandson David Mooney. A whirlwind courtship during the closing curtains of World War II found this Ohio lad hitching up to a Texas belle, whom he met in New Mexico, and then dragged her kicking and screaming to Harborcreek, Pennsylvania. They dreamed of a place of their own though, finding it at the end of a dead end road outside Ripley and subsequently raised five rambunctious boys. Jerry attended Gannon University in Erie while assembling refrigerators at General Electric but is best known around Ripley as the mailman who carried rural route 2 for over twenty years and as a steady fixture at Meeder's restaurant. Jerry was a World War II B-17 navigator which led to his being an active member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He also worked with the Rural Letter Carrier union for over 50 years while volunteering 17 years with Ripley's fire department. Community service included being a Boy Scout leader and LOGIC member, and five decades of shows, fundraisers, and parades supporting his town. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Matthew's Funeral Home, 104 W. Main in Ripley N.Y. Funeral services will be held at11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Ripley's First Baptist Church, 9869 East Side Hill Rd (Route 76 at Side Hill Rd.).
