Robert James Donovan, age 90, of Erie, formerly of Centerville, died peacefully at home of being just worn out on January 13, 2013 surrounded by loved ones. Preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Donovan, and his brothers Ted and Paul. Survived by his wife of seven years, Annamarie McNamara, sister Francis Akam of Detroit, Mich., brother Phil (Gloria) of Lakeland Fla., and sister Diana Mitchell of Lakeland, Fla.; daughters Colleen Caldwell of Point Venture Texas, Denise Hudson (Joe Goertz) of Cambridge Springs and son Brian Donovan of Winter Park, Fla.; grandsons Chip (Nazar), Todd (Anne Marie) and Tim (Emily) Caldwell, and Shawn (Melanie) Titus; and granddaughters Michelle (Steve) Curtze and Tracy Donovan (Paul Peterson), seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Bob was raised in Centerville and attended school through the 10th grade before he went to work operating heavy machinery, first for his Dad, then through the Operating Engineers Local 66, from which he received honorary recognition for 63 years membership in 2011. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy Construction Battalion, rode in the USS Westpoint to Hawaii with 1,100 guys and served 21/2 years in the Philippines building airstrips and a hospital before returning in 1945. His machine-operating career after serving in the Navy included working on Route 90, Kinzua Dam, buildings on Edinboro University campus and many other major projects. In transitioning to retirement he built a woodworking shop and spent years building for family, friends and community organizations, including gun cabinets and coffee tables for Lion's Club raffle fundraisers, custom kitchen cabinets, and a wood strip canoe. His gardens were very successful. On his 50th wedding anniversary he went waterskiing, which he did a lot of years before at Kinzua Dam. In 2004 Bob moved to Erie and joined the Summit Township Senior Citizens, where he worked on several projects. There he met Annamarie. They married and have enjoyed seven precious years of love and companionship, conversation and listening to music. Bob was lovingly accepted by Annamarie's family and friends. Bob Donovan leaves a legacy of self-reliance, physical and mechanical aptitude, community service and loyalty to family. A memorial celebrating Bob's life will be held at the Summit Township Senior Citizens, 1450 Townhall Road, Erie on Saturday, January 19, 2013.
