Gertrude (Gertie) V. Bloss Shorts, age 90, of Millcreek passed away Sunday February 24th, 2013 at Golden Living Walnut Creek retirement community, surrounded by her family. Born September 10th, 1922 in Union City, she was the daughter of late Henry and Rose Culp Bloss. Gertie was known for her loving nature, her willingness to help anyone and had a passion for winning all games she played. She was an avid bowler and had won many accolades and awards. She was also a skilled quilter and poured her heart into many quilts over the years. Gertie along with her husband Bud, shared a passion for the outdoors and camping. Together, they visited all but three states. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and had an unwavering devotion to her "babies," her four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Being an extremely hard worker, during World War II she worked at LORD corporation. Later, she worked at Horne's Department Store from which she retired in 1979. Gertie was preceded in death by her two parents, eight sisters, and two brothers. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Forrest (Bud) E. Shorts, whom she married on September 22, 1945 in Lawrence Park, as well as her two daughters: Judy Freiwald, fiancé to Dan Joslin and Sharon Yelkovich wife to Tom, both of Erie, and 4 grandsons: Jeffrey, Corey, Bryan and Matthew. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 W. 38th Street in Erie. Services will be held there on Thursday at 9:45 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Jude the Apostle Church at 10:30 a.m. Her Burial will follow at St. Teresa Cemetery in Union City. Gertrude's family wants to express their heartfelt gratitude for the exemplary love, care, and compassion that their "extended family" at Golden Living Walnut Creek, offered to them over the past 15 months and would also like to thank AseraCare Hospice.
