Joseph Yesko, age 92, of Erie, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at St. Mary's Home-East. Born March 1, 1921, in Fairview, he was the son of the late Michael and Susan (Demko) Yesko. Joe was raised on a farm near Cooperstown, N.Y. and graduated from East High School, in Erie. While in Cooperstown he played catcher for the high school team, in the dedication game of the Baseball Hall of Fame, in 1939. He also served as Treasurer of Holy Rosary's Boy Scout Troup 40. Joe was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II, where he served as a paratrooper in the South Pacific. He then worked for 42 years as an electrician at G.E., where he met Irene, his beloved wife of 64 years. Joe was a member of the Siebenburger Club and he enjoyed fishing, watching sports, especially the Cleveland Indians, and traveling. He and Irene often visited their children and were particularly fond of the oceans off Cape Cod and Florida. His Catholic faith was a large part of his life and he attended Mass at Holy Rosary and St. Luke Parishes. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene A. (Akus) Yesko, who died November 18, 2012; four brothers, John, Michael, George and Andy, and three sisters, Anna, Margaret and Susan. He is survived by his devoted children, Joseph A. Yesko, wife Jeanie of Frederick, Md., Cynthia A. Yesko of South Yarmouth, MA; and his sister Emma (Betty) Sawtelle, of Erie. Friends are invited to call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 East 38th St. and to attend prayers there Thursday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
