Robina M. Maines, age 91 of Greenfield Twp., died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Pleasant Ridge Manor-East following a lengthy illness. She was born August 1, 1921 in Nottingham, England, a daughter of the late William and Irene Herring. She emigrated to the United States in 1946 having settled in Mineral Springs, Pa. Robina had resided in the Erie area for over 50 years having lived on the family farm in Greenfield Twp. since 1959. During World War II Robina served in the Womens' Royal Voluntary Aid Detachment. It was in England during this time where she met and weded her late husband, Bruce E. Maines, who was then a Private in the U.S. Air Corps. She had been employed as a letter carrier for a number of years by the U.S. Postal Service. She had the distinction of being the first female carrier in the City of Erie. Prior to that she had been employed by several local businesses including the former Pure Truck Stop in North East Twp. She had attended the Greenfield Baptist Church. Robina was an avid reader and also enjoyed camping and rose gardening. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Lee Maines; two sons: Russell Scott and Calvin Grant Maines and one sister, Peggy Roberts. Survivors include one daughter, Beverly I. McCuster of Mineral Springs, Pa.; four sons: Bruce A. Maines of Canadohta Lake, William D. Maines of Mineral Springs, Patrick B. Maines (Brenda K.) of Erie and David A. Maines of North East; one sister, Mavis of Nottingham, England; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Further calling will be held on Tuesday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Inc. in Clearfield from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A private Funeral Service and burial will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
