Frank J. Abbate Obituary
Frank J. Abbate, age 78, of Erie, passed away Tuesday, April 23th, 2013 at UPMC Hamot as the result of a motorcycle accident. He was born in Erie on August 16th, 1934, a son of the late Antonio and Girolama (Mannino) Abbate . Frank was a graduate of Cathedral Prep, class of 1953. He was a Sergeant, in the United States Marine Corps, during the Korean War era. Most recently, Frank was meat cutter at Tops Market. Prior to that he ran Frank Abbate's Custom Cut Meats, the family business at East 4th and German Streets, until its closing in 1979. Frank was an avid Harley enthusiast and a member of St. Patrick Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Peter, Russell and Joseph Abbate; and a sister, Mary Kozik. Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. Abbate; three sons, Tony Abbate, of Martinsburg, W. Va, Frank Abbate, of Erie and Chris Abbate and wife Lisa, of Erie; brother, John Abbate and wife Irene, of Harborcreek; five grandchildren, Karen, Cristina, Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Michael Abbate; and two great grandchildren. Friends are invited to call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 East 38th St. Services will be held there on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick Church at 10:00 am. Burial will follow with military honors in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
