Walter E. Boyer, MD, 87, after a long and full life, was called home to heaven to be with our Lord and Savior at 12:40 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013 after peacefully dying in the loving arms of his wife. Born September 13, 1925, in Williamsport, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter E. Boyer, MD and Margaret Estelle Shannahan Boyer, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Dr. Boyer graduated from Oil City High School in 1943, and was accepted and planned to enter the freshman class in pre-med at the University of Notre Dame. Instead, he took an entrance exam for the Navy's V-12 program during World War II, and upon enlisting in the Navy in 1943, he was sent to Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945. Dr. Boyer was awarded a medical degree from the Thomas Jefferson Medical University in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1949. He interned at Bryn Mawr Hospital from 1949-1950. Dr. Boyer re-entered active duty with the U.S. Navy serving in Washington, D.C., and was later awarded a Korean Service Medal. Upon an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Dr. Boyer moved back to Oil City in 1952 and began a distinguished career in family practice, and retired in 1994 after 42 years of service to the community with an unblemished record. Dr. Boyer was past president of the Oil City Hospital Medical Staff, and past president of the Venango County Medical Society. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Oil City Area Health Center from 1983-1991. Dr. Boyer became a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians during a ceremony in Las Vegas in 1977. Memberships included the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Physicians, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians, and Venango County Medical Society. Dr. Boyer was appointed to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School Faculty in the Preceptor Program and served from 1975-1980. Dr. Boyer volunteered as the physician for the Athletic Department at Venango Christian High School for more than twenty years. Dr. Boyer was a charter member of the mental â€"health retardation board in the 1970's and 1980's, and was instrumental in bringing psychiatric care to Venango County. Dr. Boyer was an active board member of the local and state Lung Association in the 1970's and 1980's. Dr. Boyer was a member of the Wenango Country Club for 50 years and a long â€"time member of the One-Hundred Club. Dr. Boyer was a member of St. Joseph Church but later enjoyed the warmth and friendship of the Christian family at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Siverly, Pa. with Fr. John Malthaner,pastor in recent years, but remained a member of St. Joseph Church in Oil City. Dr. Boyer married the former Veronica Moffitt who preceded him in death in January 1982. Dr. Boyer was then married to the former Deborah Hall on May 1, 1982 by the late Msgr. Robert Schriefer at the Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage, Pa. Deb Survives and was his best friend, soul mate, and the love of his life. They made their home with two lovable kittens, Tess and Princess. He was a proud father of five children and applauded his grandchildren's accomplishments. Dr. Boyer was preceded in death by both parents, a sister Mary Alice Boyer Pilewski, infant sister, Margaret Estelle Boyer, and cousins William J. and M. Estelle Kapranski, who brought he and his sister to Oil City to live with them after the death of both parents at age 13, his father-in-law Gene Hall, and Laurie Hall, his only sister-in-law whom he was very fond of. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Walter E. Boyer III and wife Debra of Farmington Hills, Mich., Jeffrey Boyer and wife Brenda of Newbury Park, Calif., three daughters, Susan Drelick and husband Richard of Oil City, Debra Boyer Sager, M.D., and husband H. Guy of Hampton, Va., and Patricia Wabnitz and husband Jay of Pensacola, Fla., eight grandchildren, Donald Boyer and his wife Alaina, Dianna Shamus and husband Ken, Emily Drelick, Elisabeth Drelick Reeves and husband Adam, Matthew and Christopher Sager, Jason and Patrick Wabnitz, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Betty Hall, and his wife's siblings and their wives. Friends will be received from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30th, at the Reinsel Funeral Home at 116 Bissel l Ave. Oil City, Pa. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday May 1, 2013 on Walt & Deb's 31st Wedding Anniversary at St. Joseph's Church. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery.
