Dorothy (Dara) Frankoff Alex, age 87, of Erie, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital. She was born March 20, 1926 in Russellton, Pa., the daughter of the late George and Anna Evans Frankoff.

A longtime resident of Erie, Dorothy had worked at the Marx Toy Co., and later worked the information desk at St. Vincent Health Center. She also helped her cousin, Frasha at Patches Quilt Shop. Dara was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity and belonged to their Ladies Auxiliary. She was an excellent cook, baker, painter, and seamstress and enjoyed volunteering at church functions or preparing for family holidays. She was also an avid reader and treated everyone with compassion and kindness. Dara had a great sense of humor and her greatest joy was following the activities of her three daughters and her grandchildren and their families.

Besides her parents, Dara was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, John Alex, who she married on November 12, 1950 and who died on April 5, 2001; two brothers, George Frankoff and James Wasselof; and five sisters, Martha Johnson, Virginia Maras, Violet Frankoff, Ruth Morosky, and Dolores Cummings.

Dara is survived by three daughters, Joni Vatavuk and her husband, Dr. Mark Vatavuk of Erie, Andrea Madara and her husband, Eric of West Melbourne, Fla., and Pam Alex of Erie. She is the grandmother of Jessica Kindle, Allison Givens, and Jarrod Madara, and is the great-grandmother of Natasha Kindle and Gavin Givens. Dara is also survived by her loving and longtime companion, her dog, Buddy; along with nieces, Joyce Gordon, Lisa Miller, and several other nieces, nephews, and their families.

There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend funeral services Monday at 8:30 a.m. in the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity, 251 E. Front St. Burial will be in St. John the Divine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church's Endowment Fund or to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1001 State St., Erie, PA 16501.
