John Claridge Obituary

John Richardson Claridge, age 88, of Erie, died on July 15, 2015, at home, surrounded by family. He was born in Matane, Canada, on November 22, 1926, the son of the late Bertram and Helen Claridge. The family moved to the United States when John was 12 years old.

After being home schooled, John graduated from Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. He served in the U.S. Navy before graduating from Yale University, Class of 1949, with a B.A. in history. He also attended Case Western for graduate work. John worked at Hammermill Paper Company before entering the faculty at Penn State Behrend, where he also became the Dean of Faculty. He later became the Director of the Erie Historical Society and the Preservation Society of Pennsylvania. He wrote several books, including Lost Erie and Landscapes for Eternity, both of which chronicled local history and preservation.

He was very active in the Erie community as President of the Erie Philharmonic and the Erie Club. He was secretary and longstanding member of The Torch Club of Erie, and was also involved with Asbury Woods, Northern Ohio Dressage Association (NODA) and their Century Club, and the Erie Art Museum. He was a former member of Kahkwa Club. After watching his children ride horses competitively for years, his passion for riding took off and he had a special relationship with his horse Tic Toc.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years Gay; his three children: Geoffrey Claridge of Erie, Elizabeth Claridge of Tucson, Ariz., and Anne (Scott) Roberts of Hamilton, Mass.; and four grandchildren, Briton Claridge, Cody Kinney, and Eliza and Anna Roberts. He is further survived by his sister, Dorothea (Daff) (Frederick) Murray of Erie.

Friends are invited to call on the family at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th St. (at Powell Ave.), on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m., with Deacon Anthony Alleruzzo officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2115 W. 38th St., Erie, PA 16508. Send condolences at www.BurtonFuneralHome.com.

Please know your beloved Tic Toc is being well cared for and enjoying life in her mid 30s. She is very loved and I tell her you still love her everyday. She is my horses pasture buddy! Loves her carrots and misses you!

Dear family and friends of John,
I have had the pleasure of knowing John for 35 years. All of those years John has supported the residents and staff of Brevillier Village. The first time we meet was when he was one of my family members at Ball Pavilion when I started as a Social Worker in 1980. He along with his sister Dorothea were so devoted to their parents Helen and Bert Claridge. John served as the President of the Brevillier Village Foundation for many years. I dare say that without his foresight and wisdom,
Brevillier Village would not have blossomed into the campus it is today with multiple levels of care. He was instrumental in providing the leadership needed to move the Village forward. I was so glad to see him once this past year and also have a long phone conversation with him about 6 months ago. He called and he wanted a update of how things were at the Village and he loved to talk history. I have so many fond memories of John and will always be grateful for his friendship and his support of Brevillier Village. Vicky Wittuck, Senior Vice President of Brevillier Village

John was a wonderful person and he will be truly missed at Tailwind. I still remembering him walking up to feed my horse a carrot, calling his name: Wiiiiilllbur, and laughing. My prayers are with Gay and the Claridge family during this difficult time. Those who had the opportunity to know John are blessed.

Dear Geoff, Ian and families, I am so sorry to hear about John. He will truly be missed. Such a gentleman and industrious and caring individual. I will never forget John coming to the door with photos my father had lent to him for use with the Historical Society. His appreciation for all things historic especially relating to Erie, his adopted hometown. John's work will continue to live on. I had the pleasure of speaking with him several times at the Society. He gave us a lasting treasure. Rest in peace faithful servant. xo Laurie

I can't say enough about the man even though petite, John was larger than a mountain and earned the respect of many. If I would have known what a cup of hot chocolate would have brought a smile to Gays face I would have done that years before, John would only smile! Full story just ask! John would frequently come to our horse trailer for dinner or lunch at horse shows. He was especially fond of my barbecued ribs and pot roast. He made me promise that I would not tell Gay! John will be greatly missed, a very good friend to my family!

So sorry to read that John died yesterday. He was a good friend and neighbor that I knew from serving on the board of the Erie Torch Club and when he'd always come faithfully to vote at Wayside church. He was a gem whose absence will be conspicuous and his kindly presence will really be missed.
